Kia ora:
Today is Waitangi Day, which is NZ’s national day. It’s usually marked by Maori sovereignty protests and flag burnings. Oh, and it’s a nice day off in the middle of summer for the non-political types.
Anyway, here are some significant New Zealanders, by way of a reading diversion.
Ernest Rutherford - atomic science pioneer
Dame Kiri Te Kanawa - opera singer
Edmund Hillary - first honky to climb Mt Everest
Arthur Lydiard - “inventor” of running, as a pastime
Charles Upham - one of three people to win the VC with bar
Richard Pearse - aviation pioneer
Peter Jackson - movie director / producer
